Applying for a library card

Library membership is free and open to anyone.

You may join at any of our libraries or online.

Adults must show proof of current address and agree to abide by the policies and local laws of Yarra Melbourne Regional Library Corporation.

Acceptable forms of ID include:

Young people under the age of 18 need a parent or guardian's signature on a permission letter. The parent or guardian will be required to show proof of current address as above.

Getting a PIN number

A PIN number is a four digit number that provides an extra level of security when using your library card. The default PIN number is the last four digits of your telephone number. If you would prefer to specify a different number or do not have a telephone number please visit your library, phone us on 1300 650 444 or email us at yarramelbourne@yarranet.net.au with your preferred four digit number and we will enter your PIN number.

What should I do if I lose my card?

Report the loss at once by phone or in person. You are responsible for materials taken out with your card until the card is reported lost or stolen. A small fee is charged for a new card.

How long can I keep library materials?

Each time you borrow you will receive a date due receipt indicating the day you should return items to the library. Please check this date carefully.

Where can I return library materials?

All materials may be returned to any branch of the Yarra-Melbourne Regional Library (to find a library see Branch Locations & Opening Hours).
There are after hour chutes at all our libraries for your convenience.

What if my items are overdue? How much are fines?

Items, which are not returned or renewed by the due date, will incur fines. The charge for overdue items is 20 cents a day. You can avoid fines by returning or renewing your items before the due date. You can renew items that are already overdue (provided that they are not reserved by another borrower). Please note however that fines may have already accrued.

Please note that you are not able to borrow if you owe fines of more than $10.

How do I renew/make a renewal?

If you are making a renewal by phone or via iPAC have your library card barcode number handy. For iPAC you will also need your PIN number.

Most items can be renewed for another loan period provided that they are not reserved by another borrower. The due date is the last day on which you can renew your loans without incurring fines. Videos and DVDs can be renewed twice and all other items three times.

How do I reserve library materials?

You may have up to 15 reservations on your card at any one time.

Reservations are free of charge at Yarra-Melbourne libraries. Please note that there is a reservation pickup charge of $1.65 at City Library.

How do I find a book?

You will find all our items by searching the catalogue. You can find out which library holds the item, if it is on the shelf or being borrowed.

You can use the catalogue to order items to be sent to your local library for pick up, review the status of items you have reserved, renew your books or see what you have borrowed from the library and when it is due.

Can I borrow materials from other library services (Inter-Library Loans)?

Staff at the library desk can assist you to borrow books not held by the Yarra-Melbourne Regional Library from other libraries. See Inter-Library Loans for more information.

What if the library does not have titles that I'd like?

We welcome suggestions for items that are not already in the collection. Recommendation forms are available in the library. Or you may make your recommendation online.
